June 2009 – present Westcon Group

March 2008 – March 2009 Abbott Diabetes Care, Witney
Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) is a division of Abbott Laboratories, a global pharmaceutical company, and manufactures blood glucose testing strips.
While at ADC I was responsible for all aspects of Oracle and SQL Server databases on the Witney site which ranged from a 3 node 1TB RAC Oracle database to SQL Server databases of less than 1GB.
When I arrived at Witney in March the main Oracle RAC database was at version 9.2.0.5 and was the subject of frequent failures. In 3 months the database was upgraded to 10.2.0.3 and for the past 8 months has not failed once.
I rewrote many of the backup and recovery scripts and procedures and took part in ADC’s annual off-site disaster recovery test during which all required databases were successfully restored.
In conjunction with the server administrator I had developed a strategy for migrating development databases to virtual servers to reduce server count and energy consumption.
One of my first tasks at ADC was to implement some form of database monitoring which I implemented using a combination of Apache, PHP and Windows scripting. The monitoring solution displayed a dashboard of servers and databases, updated every minute, with alerts being delivered to support personnel by email. The solution also gave access to (for example) log files (including database alert logs, Windows event logs), RMAN backup records, and database space usage.
August 2007 – December 2007 Argos, Milton Keynes
Responsible for configuration and installation of a 8TB 10gR2 RAC database on AIX.
This database used Oracle Clusterware and ASM for storage management.
I also configured and installed a Dataguard physical standby database.
While at Argos I also advised on upgrading their current 9.2 database to 10gR2.
August 1997 – July 2007 O2, Slough
Contracted to O2 as Oracle DBA with responsibility for:
Development and system test environments for billing systems (Unix servers).
Design and implementation of a new database for handling specific O2 products.
Installation of Oracle, upgrade and patch existing installations.
Design and build of data warehouses to support O2 customer relation management and call analysis, with the latter database being in excess of 5TB.
Majority of time spent on Unix, split between development (60%) and production systems.
Setup Oracle Streams for replication/failover of network management database.
Install, Setup RAC (Solaris + Veritas), Dataguard for various systems (billing, CRM)
Creating database monitoring and management shell / SQL / PLSQL scripts.
Setup RMAN backups and associated scripts.
Most recently involved in migrating databases to 10gR2. Some of these upgrades were from 8.1.7 to 10gR2 and some were from 9.2 to 10gR2 supporting both bespoke and third party applications. In total I was involved in approximately 20 upgrades.
January 1997 – August 1997 Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Potters Bar
Contracted as Oracle DBA with responsibility for upgrading all Oracle databases and Unix servers to the latest versions of Digital Unix (Version 4.0) and Oracle (Version 7.3).
October 1996 – December 1996 Cellnet, Slough
Contracted to Cellnet as Oracle DBA for a Decision Support System that they were implementing. My responsibilities were to convert a logical database design (in Designer 2000) into a physical database running on a Sun E9000 Unix server.
June 1995 – September 1996 Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Potters Bar
Contracted to CWT as Oracle7 DBA. Primarily, CWT arrange business travel for corporate clients and have a variety of IT systems to support this. The front end to most systems were VAX’s running VMS version 5.5. Three DEC Alpha AXP machines running OSF version 3.2 and Oracle version 7.2 are used as database servers, the total database size is approximately 25Gb. The majority of my work as DBA and systems administrator was concentrated on the DEC Alpha / OSF platforms.
My responsibilities:
• Performance tuning.
• Setting up a development environment on a DEC Alpha AXP.
• Setting up backup and recovery procedures.
• Documenting system setup and procedures.
